The most common sunfishes growing to maximum length of 5-16”, based on species have been broadly distributed all through rivers and lakes of Canada and the US. Several species are being flourished by transplanting all over the world. At times, this procedure leads to the breeding of pests. Most of them are hunted by anglers to have pan fish, and many of them are bred for stocking lakes. Sometimes, Lepomis species are equated with the term ‘bream’. However, it is more popularly referred to identical-looking but not related European Cypriniformes belonging to genus Abramis. The fossil record of Lepomis states that these species are as old as the ‘Middle Miocene’ age. The species of Centrarchidae, a kind of Lepomis suggest this. |
